Beginner question | HT range

How far can a handheld ham radio reach?

A handheld ham radio might reach a mile or two radio-to-radio in difficult terrain, several miles in open ground, and much farther through a well-placed repeater. Range depends less on the advertised wattage and more on height, antenna quality, terrain, buildings, and whether you are using a repeater.

Realistic Range Expectations

SituationTypical ResultWhy
Inside a house or vehicleOften limitedWalls, metal, and low antenna height hurt performance.
Person to person outdoorsA few miles may be realisticLine of sight and terrain matter most.

Through a repeaterRegional coverage is possibleThe repeater has height, power, and a better antenna system.

How to Improve Handheld Range

Before buying another radio, read the handheld antenna guide and learn how to find local repeaters. Those two steps usually improve practical communication more than chasing extra watts.
